Background to the development of Neuroprotective Developmental Care or the Possums programs: theoretical frameworks (video)
This is the first part of a presentation which I later delivered to the Helen Mayo House Perinatal Mental Health Conference November 2025, Adelaide, South Australia. We've edited out the third section (on 'How Possums aims to optimise parent-infant mental health + developmental outcomes'). This talk focuses on the three theoretical frames upon which NDC or the Possums programs have been built.
This video is optional.
Time-poor clinicians join the NDC courses looking for practical skills which are effective as they help parents in the clinic. Many of you will be less interested in this close look at the theoretical models from which NDC is developed!
But others of you may be interested .... One day, it will be much better understood how vital theoretical frameworks are to the development of effective clinical interventions (and how important theoretical modelling is in implementation science i.e. translating research into clinical practice), so I've made this available anyway for anyone undertaking the Masterclasses who is interested!
